The journey in understanding our children’s challenges can feel frustrating

Freddie Wagner, director, and education consultant for LEAP!

IIt all began with an idea based on my own history.  As a childhood survivor of a rare cancer called Retinoblastoma, my parents were never sure if I would be able to see or learn to read.   This would later lead to what would now be called early interventions.

My own early educational issues stemming from the effects of frontal lobe radiation would later become foundational in my own understanding of the struggles students and their parents might face.   I became interested in learning challenges after working internationally and seeing the limited availability of help for children who learned differently.

After two decades of international teaching, I followed a career path that would train me in understanding diagnostic testing and later add counseling to my résumé.

As a husband and father, I understand the challenges and stressors that can come from raising a child with learning challenges.

Understanding Learning Disabilities

Simple as 1, 2, 3…

1 — There are many different types of diagnostic tests that can be used to diagnose learning disabilities, including cognitive assessments, achievement tests, and functional assessments. These tests can help identify specific learning difficulties, such as difficulty with reading, writing, or math, and can provide important information about an individual's strengths and weaknesses.

2 — One of the key benefits of diagnostic testing is that it can provide a comprehensive and detailed picture of an individual's abilities and challenges. This information can be used to develop an effective treatment plan and to support the individual in achieving their learning goals.

3 — Diagnostic testing can also help identify the underlying causes of a learning disability, such as neurological or developmental issues, and can provide important information to educators, parents, and other caregivers. This can help them better understand how to support the individual and can lead to more effective interventions and accommodations.

Overall, diagnostic testing is an important tool for diagnosing learning disabilities and can provide valuable information to support individuals in achieving their learning goals.
